Language Policy

Roles and Responsibilities

E. Rivers Elementary is dedicated to upholding the standards and practices of the International Baccalaureate program in teaching and learning. Supported by ongoing teacher training and professional development opportunities, we prioritize the importance of language as a key tool for learning, communication, and self-expression. Recognizing that all teachers play a role in language instruction, we aim to foster inquiry-based language learning across all subjects throughout the school day.

Assessment of language progress is conducted regularly by classroom teachers and support staff using various tools such as GKIDS, NWEA MAP Reading, and ACCESS testing. Faculty members commit to collaborating with students to enhance essential language skills including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Individualized materials and instruction are utilized to cater to students' diverse needs.

The staff and grade level teams collectively form the policy team responsible for reassessing and updating the language policy. Through collaborative planning and IB training, all teachers are equipped with an understanding of the PYP philosophies. Effective communication of policies to school stakeholders is overseen by teachers, support staff, administrators, and the PYP coordinator. The head of school, PYP coordinator, district program coordinators, and instructional coach are accountable for providing professional development in language teaching and learning. The publication of school policies on the website ensures widespread awareness and support among all stakeholders.

Language Development at E. Rivers Elementary

Primary instruction in English focuses on reading and writing skills, integrated with transdisciplinary themes, social studies, and science content standards. Students engage in reading and writing activities for approximately 100 minutes daily, setting personal goals and tracking progress to enhance key skills. Second language instruction in Spanish occurs twice a week, emphasizing vocabulary development, conversational language, and basic reading and writing skills. Spanish teachers align their curriculum with grade level units of inquiry to promote cultural understanding and relevance.

Dual Language Immersion Program

The Dual Language Immersion Program at E. Rivers aims to develop biliteracy in English and Spanish, fostering a global mindset and cultural competence among students. Through a 50/50, two-way Spanish model, students split their academic day between English and Spanish instruction. The program supports the linguistic growth of both native Spanish and English speakers, ensuring a cohesive educational experience from kindergarten through fifth grade. Students switch between English and Spanish homerooms for various subjects, with English instruction used for reading, language arts, and social studies, and Spanish instruction utilized for phonics, reading, writing, math, and science.

Sustaining Language Programs at E. Rivers

E. Rivers Elementary secures funding for teacher training, grants, and educational resources from the general fund and the E. Rivers Education Foundation (EREF). The school's media center is stocked with resources and leveled texts in both English and Spanish, with purchases aligned with unit planners and input from Professional Learning Communities. The district remains committed to supporting the IB Program, including the PYP, MYP, DP, and CP, ensuring adequate resources for classrooms, the media center, and ongoing professional development initiatives.
